Rihanna’s hairstylist Responds to her Doobie Wrap

Rihanna’s hairstylist, Ursula Stephen, spoke with ELLE about Rihanna’s now infamous doobie from her appearance at the 2013 American Music Awards.
Since the style has created such a controversy, Urusla took the opportunity to clear up a few of the unanswered questions and offer a little more insight as to whose decision it was to actually wear the wrap.


Check out a few excerpts from the interview below.

Whose idea was it for Rihanna to wear a doobie wrap?
It was actually Rihanna’s idea. She had her mind made up! Honestly, I was a little hesitant but I knew she could pull it off, so I was all for it.
Did you anticipate the overwhelming reaction?
I knew it would get a reaction but I wasn’t sure if it would be positive or negative. A doobie on the red carpet has never been done before so I knew it could have gone either way.
Do you foresee the wrap, worn outside the home/salon, becoming a universal trend?
Sure. I mean, it’s already been done. I see girls on the street rocking them all the time shopping, eating, etc. It’s just never been seen in a formal setting.
Some interpreted the style to mean Rihanna is nonchalant about her AMAs honor while others felt it was a unique and clever nod to her culture at a time when the world was watching. What statement were you and Rihanna trying to make?
It was a nod to fashion! This is a style that can be worn by some of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood. The wrap actually has roots in the ’30s finger waves hairstyle, and with the embellished pins, it channeled Old Hollywood.
Were the pins a request Rihanna made or your own design decision? What did they bring to the look?
Yes, the ’30s were all about [the wrap]! The pins helped to elevate the look from just your average doobie.
There’s been quite a bit of backlash from some members of the African-American and Latina community, who feel the wrap should be relegated to the bedroom. How do you respond to that criticism?
Everyone has an opinion. However, the doobie has been worn to Bergdorf Goodman. They just haven’t been paying attention. And it’s been around since the ’30s. Part of my job is to know eras, trends and fashion, and to keep looks alive by adding a modern twist.
You were also behind Rihanna’s iconic cut during the ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ era. Together, you two consistently step outside the box and experiment with hair. Is it your goal to push the envelope further and further with Rihanna’s looks? What groundbreaking style do you want her to try next? 
Of course! As an artist, you can’t take yourself too seriously. It’s about evolving, having fun, feeling beautiful and letting the look interpret the feeling, mood and the music! I feel like we have done everything. However, there is a mental list of “looks,” not styles, that we want to try. More iconic shit is on the list.

Zimbabwe to open a ‘blacks only’ stock exchange

Zimbabwe’s regime has promised to open a new and racially exclusive stock exchange, allowing blacks alone to trade shares seized from foreign companies.

Chile bump what you heard, South Africa said they are tired of you Americans taking all of their money. So they have decided to start their own stock exchange.

The plan to grab mining companies, most of which are South African-owned, follows President Robert Mugabe’s landslide re-election last week.

Saviour Kasukawere, the ‘indigenisation’ minister, said on Tuesday that the government or black Zimbabweans would take 51 per cent of the shares in all major foreign-owned companies, valued at about £4.8 billion. No compensation will be paid.
The regime wants to control mining companies and in particular Zimplats, a major platinum producer which is largely owned by South Africa’s Impala Platinum Holdings.
Mr Kasukawere said that mining companies which do not “cede” 51 per cent of their shares to black Zimbabweans or the state would risk losing their operating licenses.
He said the value of the natural resources or underground metals extracted by the companies were sufficient to pay for majority shareholdings.

Saviour Kasukawere, the ‘indigenisation’ minister, said on Tuesday that the government or black Zimbabweans would take 51 per cent of the shares in all major foreign-owned companies, valued at about £4.8 billion. No compensation will be paid.
John Robertson, an independent economist in Harare, said: “There is no logic in that plan. He is in danger of introducing economic apartheid which is absurd.”
Mr Robertson added: “I think this is only politicking and there is no substance to this.”
Metals and minerals, including platinum and gold, accounted for 71 per cent, or £480 million, of Zimbabwe’s total exports last year.
South Africa has a bilateral trade and protection agreement with Zimbabwe. If the regime presses ahead and seizes a controlling stake in South African mining companies, they could use these agreements to secure compensation or the return of assets via international courts.
Whether Mr Mugabe’s regime would respect any such rulings is another question.
Mr Mugabe seized almost all of Zimbabwe’s white-owned farms, often in defiance of court orders, and without compensation.

Chik-fil-A needs to get it together!!!!

Now Chick-fil-A has lost their mind. First you don’t like gay people and now you don’t care for black people. This is a absolute PICKLE.
After a record setting sales day last week, Chick-fil-A President and Chief Operating Officer Dan Cathy has realized that hatred and bigotry are extremely profitable in the United States. While hundreds of people stood in line to “celebrate” the Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day and show their support for Cathy’s anti-gay agenda, Cathy was already considering his next move. According to a senior level manager, Cathy is planning a marketing campaign around his next controversial and extremely profitable statement. Cathy considered many targets that would appeal to his primarily southern-based conservative customers before ultimately saying the following:

“Let’s milk this for all its worth. Let’s wait until this gay thing dies down a little, then I will release another statement that says that we don’t like blacks either. Now, they’re protected by those stupid discrimination laws so we’ll need to be careful, but I think it will work. I mean hey, it’s not like it’s a lie. We’ll have another Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day before you know it!”

When confronted, Cathy defended his comments:

“We are a private company with a deeply personal belief system. We are lucky to live in a country where we are allowed to practice those beliefs. We abide by all of the discrimination laws and we welcome colored folk in our restaurants. I even hire them to work in my restaurants. We do not discriminate against anyone because of their color. However, if I’m being honest, we really don’t care for them. That is my opinion and I have a right to express it.”

While Mr. Cathy does have a right to his opinion, his statement is sure to spark an outcry from the African American community, people who believe in equality and anyone with a modicum of intelligence. However, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, “the number of radical hate groups and militias has exploded in recent years” so he will likely find himself again with many supporters. In fact, “the number of radical ‘anti-government’ militia groups increased from 150 to 1,274 during the years of the Obama presidency. There have been more homegrown domestic terrorism attacks by right-wing groups than by international terrorists during his presidency as well…. [There’s] a generalized feeling that ‘this is not the country my Christian white forefathers built. We’ve got to take this country back.’” Since the vast majority of these groups are made up of right-wing conservatives, Cathy’s latest campaign will successfully establish Chick-fil-A as the official sponsor for right-wing hate groups.
According to our source, Cathy ultimately chose to focus his hate on African Americans after considering and dismissing a promotion that would put actual AK-47s in their Kid’s Meals. According to Cathy, “We wouldn’t want some of those kids to have them.” He also considered a “Muppets promote interspecies relationships” promotion but was afraid of potential lawsuits. Cathy is continuing his plans to unveil a new campaign every few months with future targets including “liberals and people of Asian, Hispanic and Arabic descent”. Apparently there is a lot of hate in the U.S.A. and Cathy plans to “milk” every last drop.
